The Royal Colombo Golf Club is situated in a picturesque suburb of the city of Colombo District 8 and received its Royal Charter from the British Crown in 1928 - one of the oldest golf clubs in the world; it celebrated its centenary in 1979. The course is fairly flat with broad avenues and it is not unusual to experience the odd local pedestrian crossing one of the fairways or to see the occasional train on the 6th as the Kelani Valley Railway runs through that part of the course. There is a lot of water making the course challenging for the low handicap player who is willing to risk the shot that takes the short route to the green. The course can be reached by taxi from most city hotels within twenty minutes, depending on the time of day and the traffic conditions and is popular so pre-booking is highly recommended.
The club house offers the visitor refreshments in air conditioned comfort with fine views over the course, although in addition to the Coffee Shop there is a fine dining room. Locker rooms and facilities are available for ladies and gentlemen. The Club has a fine Practice Range open for use from 6.00 am to 9.00 pm except on Mondays.
