The Cultural Triangle, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's `Cultural Triangle' is situated just north of centre of the Country, bounded by Sigiriya in the south, Anurahapura in the northwest and Polonnaruwa to the east. It is a wonderful region to visit whilst on your holiday in Sri Lanka, covering nearly 2,000 years of Sri Lankan history.

Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World. Anuradhapura, meanwhile, was one of the world's greatest monastic cities 2,000 years ago and has seven important sites and two museums. Take a traditional Sri Lankan form of transport, the tuk-tuk, to get around them all.

Polonnaruwa was the medieval capital of Sri Lanka and it too has some impressive buildings to see, notably the 12th century Royal Citadel and the Gal Vihara - a Buddhist shrine from the same period which features some outstanding stone carvings of the Buddha.

The town of Habarana is one of the best bases for exploring the Cultural Triangle, and is also a starting place for elephant safaris - a great way to see the countryside. The best time for elephant sightings is from July to September when huge herds collect at the Miridiya Lake. Hot air ballooning is also available and provides tourists with an unforgettable experience.
