On the 26th of July 1965, the Maldives gained independence from Britain and now every year Maldivians celebrate Independence Day with a host of festivities including decorations, parades, music, dancing, and bountiful feasts.
On November 11th 1968, the Republic of Maldives was established and the government has remained in this form ever since. The very first Maldives resort, a huge tourist attraction, was built in 1972. The Republic of Maldives endured a brief invasion by Tamil pirates from Sri Lanka in 1988, but with the aid of the Indian government, the invading force was overthrown and the order of the Republic was restored.
