Maldivian history dates to 2000BC, when a group of seafarers settled on the islands. Around the 4th century AD Buddhism became the dominant religion and many Buddhist temples were built on the islands. Islam, the current official religion of the country, took over in 1153. Historically, the Maldives was a major trade centre on the Indian Ocean marine trade route, where cowrie shells were used for currency in parts of Asia and East Africa
