The early history of the Maldives is full of stories. Many of these stories are anecdotal, but are based on real things that happened in the history of the Maldives. There is a story about a sea monster called the Rannamaari. The Rannamaari demands a virgin sacrifice every time there is a full moon until a Mr. Abdul Barakaath-Ul Barbary from Morocco prohibits the monster from entering the Maldives by reading from the Koran. This of course saves multiple virgins and ended with the Maldivian king converting to Islam.
A legend of Maldives says that the first inhabitants died in great quantities until a sorcerer conjured coconut trees out of the buried skulls of the dead. The tuna fish, a fish the locals enjoy, was supposedly brought to the Maldives by a man named Bodu Niyami Kalēfanu who went to the end of the world retrieve them.
There is also a story about a man named Bodu Thakurufaanu who saved the Maldives from invaders from Portugal. The Christian Portuguese were reputedly cruel rulers, but they were finally slain by Bodu Thakurufaanu and a group of brave locals. This victory is still celebrated annually to this day.
Other Maldivian stories feature magic, historical persons, evil spirits, and explanations of how their government came to be. There are a few popular stories about local land or sea creatures. In these stories seabirds, crabs, or fishes are the heroes. Many of these stories are loved by adults and children alike.
