More than 1000 low-lying coral islands make up the archipelago of the Maldives. The Maldives islands lie in groups of 26 atolls. These atolls are a part of the Laccadives-Chagos Ridge. The reefs that form the atolls protect the islands from the winds and waves. Some of the Maldives islands are mere sandbanks. Others are tropical islands with beaches of white sand, clear blue lagoons full of rich wildlife, and leafy green vegetation.
