The Beautiful South

Journey South beyond Galle and witness a less frenetic island life, the road is quieter with less traffic and long beaches turn into marvellous small sandy bays. It is here that fishermen prefer to wade out into the shallow waters in the evening and sit precariously on stilt like platforms constructed from driftwood to catch their daily meal or eke out a meagre existence. The small village of Koggala, is home to many of these fishermen and it is here that the Fortress has been built to take full advantage of the wonderful beach location at this point.

Transfer Options - Road

Should you decide to travel to Koggala by road from the city of Colombo or the International airport you will need to set aside a half a day - whilst the distance might not seem too great, the one road can be pretty busy at times and you may need to allow up to five hours. The journey follows the coast, winding southwards skirting popular resorts with such names as Kalutara, Wadduwa, Bentota and Hikkaduwa. Colourful tropical scenery with swaying tall palm trees, fishermen hawking their catch at the side of the road and stalls offering deliciously refreshing King Coconut juice tempt you to stop en route, eventually you arrive at the city of Galle, a United Nations World Heritage site and famously a venue for test cricket. Continue for a few more miles passing picturesque bays to arrive at the small hamlet of Koggala and discover the serenity, beauty and warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality personified by The Fortress – all road transfers are carried out by licensed professional English speaking driver guides using modern air conditioned vehicles with full insurance.

Transfer Options - By Air Taxi

Alternatively, with the arrival of the Sri Lankan Air Taxi service it is now possible to fly from Colombo International airport to Koggala Lake in less than an hour. On arrival at Koggala Lake the journey is completed by a short road transfer by car to the Hotel. Soar into the air and catch a glimpse of the beautiful southern shores of this wonderful tropical island – please note that because of the flight schedule it may be necessary to overnight in Colombo before commencing the journey. **Currently the Air Taxi service has been suspended by Sri Lankan Airlines.**
