Sri Lanka - Tea Plantations

It was only by chance that the now famed terraces of tea were planted in Sri Lanka as tea was only introduced in 1867 at the Loolecondera estate south east of Kandy by James Taylor as an emergency substitute for coffee, which had been decimated by disease. The bush thrived in the climate and proved so successful that it very quickly established itself as the main export of Ceylon, tea clippers were very soon sailing regularly from the port at Colombo back to England carrying their precious cargo, replacing the far east as the major source of this popular and fashionable expensive drink.

A two night private tour to beautiful Nuwar Eliya high in the hills, includes overnight accommodation on half board basis and a visit to a tea plantation and factory. Return via Kandy and the elephant orphanage - price per person based on two people sharing £189.00
