A less savoury popular pass time enjoyed by gentlemen 200 years ago was hunting.
Horton plains are very accessible from Nuwara Eliya and at the time herds of elephant roamed the plains thriving on the lush vegetation growing in such profusion.
Legend has it that one particular gentleman single handily destroyed the population of these peaceful animals and drove them from the plains forever.
Buried in the grounds of the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club at the rear of the Club House, the gentleman died in tragic circumstances being struck by lightening, local legend has it that his grave has been struck by lightening twice since he was interred - propagating the theory that elephants never forget.
