A settlement at Nuwara Eliya was first discovered by a hunting party led by Dr John Davy in 1818. Eventually a small town was established in 1847 by Sir Samuel Baker two years after he spent time in the area convalescing after contracting malaria.
The town very quickly established itself as a favourite meeting place for many of the English planters who found themselves in a foreign land far away and missing their home comforts. Accordingly, a number of facilities were established in the town to which ‘gentlemen’ could travel from their Estates at weekends and pursue traditional English pastimes, these included The Gentleman's Hill Club, The Nuwara Eliya Race Course and The Nuwara Eliya Golf Course close to the aptly named St Andrews Hotel, an Anglican Church was built and a park was established in the centre of the town, trout were introduced in to surrounding streams.
