Although the small coastal village of Negombo is expanding it still retains its village atmosphere and charm only 15km from the international airport standing at the mouth of a large lagoon. Here much of the income of the local population is still derived from fishing and a number of speciality restaurants serving locally caught fish have cropped up and earned a deservedly good reputation – try the delicious local speciality of baked crab. Names such as Coconut Primitive, King Coconut, The Barrel, The Prikin conjure up images of good local food served with a smile as warm as the curried aubergine. In the evening wander along the shops and pick up a souvenir or visit one of the many gem shops or simply sit on the beach and witness the sun going down in another spectacularly dazzling display of red hues.
Away from Negombo it is possible to take an excursion to experience some of the treasures of this fascinating island.
