Monday - Full Day - Coach Excursion
Our excursion journeys through the rugged south-east taking us to the birth of Mauritius civilisation in the 18th Centruy village of Mahebourg. The Dutch first landed at Grand Port in the 1700's starting the colonisation of Mauritius, the French constructed the first harbour at Mahebourg and in 1810 it was here that Napoleon scored his only naval victory over the English.
At the entrance of Mahebourg we discover the Naval Museum, which houses a variety of relics dating back to the historic battle of Grand Port and its grand past. Situated within the magnificent colonial house the museum was once the infirmary which during the battle gave medical treatment side by side to both the English Captain Willoughby and the French Captain Duperre.
Following our visit to the museum we drive to the waterfront and then stroll through the 'Bazar Mahebourg', the village market, where tropical fruit stalls, local spices, fresh vegetables and a variety of clothes stalls create a typical Mauritian ambience. The market gives you the oportunity to test your haggling skills to the limit.
We leave Maheborg and drive to Falaise Rouge for refreshments whilst enjoying the magnificent views over the islands east coast.
Our excursion continues through the small coastal village to Domaine du Chasseur at Anse Jonchee, a private hunting reserve home to the last unique Mauritian kestrel, a bird of prey endemic to Mauritius.
Domaine du Chasseur is a paradise for naturalists and trekkers.
Transfer by 4x4 to the restaurant Le Panoramour for a traditional Mauritian lunch. At an altitude of 600m the restaurant offers panoramic views over the bay of Mahebourg. Following lunch with a rum tasting session.
Our journey ends with a walk down through the Domaine to the observation post, we you can enjoy the spectacular views over the Ile de la Passe, Ile aux Phare and Ile Marianne.
