Esala Perahera is also known as the Buddhist Festival of the Tooth. Legend explains that when Buddha was cremated, one of his devotees removed one of his teeth from the pyre. This sacred relic was later brought to Sri Lanka and passed to the King Megavanna, who was so pleased to have the tooth in his land, that he declared the occasion a national holiday and paraded it through the city. This is a religious event in which Buddhists pray for a successful season of crop growing, plenty of rain, and a good harvest.
