Kalutara, Sri Lanka

If you are looking for a beach destination which still retains its charm and tradition, look no further than Kalutara in Sri Lanka. Holidays here are complete escapism - palm fringed beaches, warm blue water and gently shelving sand. All this and more is just 40 kilometres from Colombo International Airport.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach and all it has to offer, Kalutara is ideally placed for exploring the many fascinating sites in the western part of Sri Lanka.

There are sightseeing opportunities right on the doorstep including the Kalutara temple and Buddhist shrine, one of the holiest sites in Sri Lanka. Despite its religious importance it is a lively place to visit and observe the thrice daily offerings.

The town itself has traditional bazaars and roadside stalls selling locally made baskets, reed mats and mongosteens, a unique fruit for which Kalutara is famous. Kalutara town is small, so there are only a few banks and ATMs, but all the large hotels have a currency exchange.

There are several small restaurants in Kalutara serving traditional Sri Lankan food, especially fresh sea food. Nightlife is centred on the resort hotels with traditional music and dance evenings several times a week.
