Because of its geographic location strong under currents can be are generated resulting in dangerous rip tides and under currents.When on the beaches in Hotel locations the International red flags system is in place, warning of the dangers of entering the seas, do not swim in an area where a red flag is flying.

Many hotels will provide a packed lunch and a short taxi ride will take you to one of a number of Bays along the coast where one can spend a few hours sunbathing.

One of the best and prettiest beaches for swimming in and partaking in water sports is Unawatuna, located about five kilometres out of the city. There are beach cafes and plenty of surf for boarders.
