The resort of Galle lies 116 kilometres from Colombo on the south-western tip of the island and is the fourth largest city in Sri Lanka.Galle Fort is one of the most visited attractions in Sri Lanka. The fort was built by the Dutch, but it was Portuguese explorers who first developed Galle when they arrived in the 16th century. There is so much history here that Galle has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
Everyone enjoys shopping, you'll not be disappointed with the chic boutiques selling up-to-the-minute fashions combining Galle's old crafts of gemstone cutting and lace manufacture.
One of the best and prettiest beaches for swimming in and partaking in water sports is Unawatuna, located about five kilometres out of the city. There are beach cafes and plenty of surf for boarders.
Galle resorts are suitable for all ages and are especially popular with families. There is plenty to occupy children; turtle watching is a great pastime for both children and parents.
