The busy port of Galle is famous for its Dutch-walled fortress and being the venue for test match cricket in the South West of Sri Lanka. The City is little more than a large sprawling town with a busy bus station and market at its heart. The train from Colombo in the North runs down the coast stopping at the station in Galle before continuing its journey to its final destination at Matara. Beyond Galle the coast is a series of beautiful bays blessed with pristine sand and clear waters. Visit Thalpe in the early evening and catch a glimpse of the famous stilt fishermen, as they perch precariously on wooden poles just off the shore. Patiently they sit and wait for a bite seemingly comfortable as the waves gently splash around the base of their crudely constructed gantry.
