The second largest of the seven emirates which make up the United Arab Emirates, Dubai is located on the southern shores of the Arabian Gulf. It has an area of some 3,900 square kilometres.
Outside the city itself, Dubai is sparsely inhabited and characterised by desert vegetation. Oil contributes just 20 per cent of economic production with trading, manufacturing and services including tourism now dominating the economy.
Tourists can enjoy a relaxed and pleasant life style in Dubai. There is virtually no crime, the city is clean, there are few traffic jams, hotels and facilities are superb and, surprisingly to many, the climate is not only tolerable, but also extremely pleasant for most of the year.
