Diving in Mauritius
A successful diving holiday in Mauritius depends upon finding the right sites to dive in and around. While diving in any location is sure to bring some enjoyment, for the diver seeking true beauty and underwater adventure, some areas are far more desirable than others, with each part of the island offering its own unique experience. Here are just a few:
Southwest
The south-western part of Mauritius is well-known for the dolphins who take shelter in the bays of Tamarin and Black River. At Flic en Flac, the Cathedral offers spectacular diving, with diverse topography that includes caves and arches that are perfect for exploring. Rempart Serpent is another prime location, serving as shelter to a wide variety of fauna, including stone fish, scorpion fish, lion fish, and moray eels. There are also plenty of shipwrecks to explore, in particular the Tug II, Kei Sei 113, and Hoi Siong.
To the North
On the northern part of the island, Peter Holt's Rock serves as host to giant moray eels and titan trigger fish while RochesBaleines has a fantastic drop with a wealth of fish and even the occasional turtle. There are also plenty of shipwrecks here as well, including the HassenMian in Balaclava, the Stella Maru in Trou aux Biches, and the Silver Star in Grand Baie.
The islands of the north are also attractive areas for diving, although many of the diving clubs do not go that far out. Easily accessible and within an hour's boat ride, sites to visit include Gunner's Coin, The Wall, the Wreck of the Jabeda, and Sleepers Cave, which often shelters sleeper sharks.
If you are diving for the first time we recommend you visit your GP before travelling to obtain a medical certificate confirming that you are fit to dive.
