The closest real beach to Colombo can be found at the suburb of Mt Lavinia 10km south of the city. A short exciting ride by local tuk tuk will take you to an outstanding stretch of sand with wonderful views of Colombo city in the distance, be pleasantly surprised at the quality of food served at some of the beachside cafes, although the Mount Lavinia Hotel welcomes visitors for lunch on the terrace.
Increasingly, the city of Colombo is becoming a fashionable place to be seen out and about at night, where there are some very desirable restaurants to be found serving a variety of eastern and western cuisine. It is also acceptable to go on to a night club afterwards and a number have opened recently providing late night entertainment.
