Beruwella lies on the west coast and its close proximity to the capital, Colombo, makes it a favourite resort for holidaymakers arriving for their Sri Lanka holidays. The palm-fringed beach is a mile-long stretch of sand set in a lovely bay and has some top class Sri Lanka hotels. The seafront hotels and guest houses offer a wide selection of traditional Sri Lanka accommodation as well as having great sea views. There is more to Beruwella than its beaches, however.
There is plenty of history for culture vultures. Beruwella is reputed to be the oldest Muslim settlement in Sri Lanka and was an important port for Sri Lanka's vital trading links. The Kechimatal Mosque stands on a headland of the harbour and is just one of the many holy sites to be seen in the region. There are plenty of other tourist sites, such as the turtle hatchery at Kagoda, and the elephant orphanage at Pinnawela. An underwater attraction is the coral garden just off Beruwella beach.
The climate here is dry and sunny all year round, so holidaymakers do not have to worry too much about a rainy season. There are heavy showers in late spring and autumn so the high season can be said to be between October and April.
There are numerous beach huts selling souvenirs, and town centre shops selling jewellery. Tourists should ensure that they buy from government licensed outlets.
Eating out in Beruwella is cheap and there are plenty of restaurants serving good Sri Lankan fare.
