Transfers on Mauritius
All vehicles used to transport guests are provided by our local GMC, Ground Management Company, Connections – none of the vehicle used are more than three years old and each is fully insured. Seat belts are provided for your safety and we strongly recommend that you ensure each member of your party belts up; drivers are licensed guides and speak English. Driving conditions are good in Mauritius and it is possible to rent a vehicle for a few days, (you will need to produce a valid UK driving licence and leave an imprint of a credit card), but taxi prices are reasonable and often work out to be more convenient.
Health
There are no compulsory vaccinations required for passengers travelling to Mauritius from the United Kingdom. However, you should visit you General Practitioner for the latest advice – Typhoid, Tetanus and Hepatitis are recommended. The occasion mosquitoes can be a nuisance and you should take a good skin spray with you and ensure that you cover up during the high risk time at dusk. Air Conditioning in Hotels deters mosquitoes, although the odd hardy insect may be persistent in which case a copy of a local paper may be required to treat the offender. Most properties spray rooms in the evening or light a mosquito coil and this is normally a sufficient deterrent. There has been an outbreak of Chikununya in the islands of the Indian Ocean, but steps have been taken and the risk is now diminishing. Visitors are being advised to consult their GP and take malaria precautions.
Should you need to see a doctor ask the reception at the hotel who will normally be able to arrange a consultation at fairly short notice? You may be required to pay for the service and any prescribed medicines, please remember to keep receipts in case you need to make an insurance claim on your return.
In the tropics the suns rays can be particularly strong, even on overcast days ultra violet rays can penetrate cloud cover and burn skin. Always use high factor sun screens, sunbathe for short periods only, avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water. The higher the SPF factors on your cream, the greater the protection against UVB rays which cause burning.
Topless sun bathing is tolerated on hotel beaches.
Finally, the local inhabitants of Mauritius are tolerant with gentle polite people of many religious persuasions. It is customary for ladies to ensure they cover their shoulders and legs when entering any religious site or building and gentlemen should always wear a shirt.
