The South Coast of Mauritius is relatively unspoilt compared to other areas of the island where tourism has been firmly established for a number of years. Natural forest and streams of sparkling waters harbour a large variety of native plant and wildlife indigenous to the island much of which now forms part of the unique Valriche Nature Reserve. This beautiful natural area is dominated by rolling hills and green valleys, take a walk along one of the many nature trails that meander into the dense forest, the reserve is run by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation and a visit is a must to see a completely different aspect of this fascinating island. A number of other ingredients make the area particularly special; the wonderful sandy beaches that stretch along the coast and the Golf du Chateau, a challenging international standard 18 hole golf course. Bel Ombre is the name of a plantation founded by Charles Telfair who enhanced the region with his social and botanical innovations – the name Bel Ombre originates from a Sweetwater fish “the ombre” found in waters off this coast.
